Free Traffic Tip #4 : Squeeze More Free Offline Publicity Out of Your News Feed

This is especially for those of you dragging your feet on creating a feed to help market your site.

Let me ask you a question. Do you read the newspaper or watch the news? Is it something you’d say you do about once a day? On Sundays do you do it twice with the paper, and a news show at night?

Most people, especially here in the States, would say yes. In our “right-now” society, the news is one of those things that we can consume at will, and always have a steady supply of refills.

Now, think about this. What if you WERE the news?

And you are, aren’t you? I mean really, isn’t one of the functions of your site to inform? Even if it’s a mini-site whose function is really to inform through a product?

Of course it is.

So what’s taking you so long to get that news feed up, publicized… improved?

If you DO have a news feed already, especially one in a category that doesn’t have a lot of feeds to chose from, it may be press release time.

It’s no secret that this time of year is the slowest time in the news traditionally, with the exception of election coverage. Take advantage of this. I know I’ve said it before, but the power of a press release, done properly, can get you offline exposure in places you never thought about.

And why is the press release about your news feed special? Because the mainstream surfer is just starting to warm up to the idea of feeds. That means you have the dual opportunity of educating the public about news feeds, and giving them yours as one to try. And if you’re the only one in your genre or niche, you can also become the expert just by sharing observations you’ve probably already made about your industry in your feed.

Don’t worry about converting your own online audience directly yet. Mention it, but realize that some people won’t come aboard until “everybody’s doing it.” In the mean time, get into the offline audience, and get your feed to the early adopters.

I have more to say on this, but I’m going to save it for my book. I’m finally tuckered out. See you tomorrow!
